Why capable people stay stuck

You didn't build this business by accident. You’ve navigated every difficult decision, every risk, every problem that seemed insurmountable. The evidence of your capability is all around you.
So why do the same problems keep recurring?
Why is that supplier relationship still tense, no matter how hard you try? Why does your team’s performance improve temporarily and then slide backwards? Why is that decision so hard to make, why does that conversation with a key member of your team keep getting deferred?
Most business owners assume the answer lies in finding the right strategy, the next tool, hiring the right person. In my experience, the answer lies somewhere closer to home.
The patterns that keep showing up in your business almost always mirror patterns running inside you. You can see it in the way you respond to conflict, and in the challenges you avoid tackling. These aren't character flaws. They're habits formed under pressure, usually a long time ago, running on autopilot ever since. We all have them. The most important thing you can do is become aware of them, so that you start to have a choice in how they impact your business.
One thing to try this week: Pick the problem in your business that keeps coming back. Write down three occasions it's happened. Then ask yourself one question: what did I do, or not do, in each of those moments that was the same? The pattern is there. Seeing it clearly is the beginning of changing it.
