10/09/2025The Art of Layering for Winter Golf - Stay Comfortable, Play Confidently

When temperatures dip and weather becomes unpredictable, the best way to stay warm and comfortable is to layer up. It’s all about maintaining flexibility, adapting to changing conditions, and feeling comfortable throughout the entire round.
Let’s break down why layering is so essential on the golf course, and help you to get it right.
Why Layering Matters in Golf
Golf isn’t like most sports, you're outside for hours, moving, walking, swinging, and then sometimes waiting. That’s a lot of time for the weather (and your body temperature) to shift.
Done right, layering helps you:
- Stay dry
- Keep warm without overheating
- Change as the weather changes
- Maintain flexibility to swing
- The Underlayer
This is your base layer, and it does more than just keep you warm.
A good underlayer is:
- Moisture-wicking – pulls sweat away from the skin
- Lightweight – won’t restrict your movement
- Temperature-regulating – helps trap body heat when needed, while allowing breathability
Look for fabrics like performance polyester, bamboo blends, or merino wool which are all designed for activewear. This layer sits close to your skin, so comfort is non-negotiable!
🚫 Skip cotton — it holds onto sweat and gets cold fast.
✅ Go for something technical that keeps you feeling dry and fresh.
- The Midlayer
This is where you build warmth. Your midlayer sits overtop of your base and it could be:
- A quarter-zip top
- A lightweight sweater
- Or a long-sleeve polo
This layer should insulate without being bulky, and ideally offer a bit of stretch for movement.
- The Outer Layer
Your final layer depends on the weather:
- Windy? Go for a breathable windbreaker.
- Drizzly? A waterproof jacket that’s light but durable.
- Just chilly? A vest or gillet can add warmth while freeing up your arms.
Look for features like zipped pockets, adjustable cuffs, and soft linings to level up your comfort and function.
Layering isn’t just about looking good (though it definitely helps!) it’s your secret weapon for staying comfy and focused out on the course.
